Afshar Carpets

Afshar Rugs are handwoven Persian rug styles produced by the Turkic Afshar tribe, a semi-nomadic group principally located in the mountainous areas surrounding the modern region of Iranian Azerbaijan. An additional population of Afshar tribes-people is located in the Quchan area in Khorasan Razavi province of Iran and the city of Kerman.

Nature has been the main inspiration for Afshar weavers. Due to their semi-nomadic nature, they use colours and patterns that symbolises their external environment. Red and blue are usually the primary colours, while other colours such as cream, orange, and saffron are common. Stylised floral and geometric (diamond shape) designs are general patterns, although as described, their weaving designs are not limited to these patterns, and they have other patterns inspired by nature surrounding them during different seasons and places.
